Tatsu, my corn snake Dec. 15th, 2008 @ 12:24 am
I traveled back to the UK for the holidays last week, and got a cold on the plane and was sick for a few days. The most exciting news is that I'm at last reunited with Tatsu, my corn snake who escaped twice and survived a year in our garden.
He is very cute, extremely active and a little fiesty - very different snake-personality to my sleepy python.

Google's Project 10^100 Sep. 25th, 2008 @ 11:20 pm
Google has launched a website to post ideas that will benefit the human race. Ideas will be voted for in popularity by the public, and financial backing will be given to the top few. It's an interesting and nice idea. I look forward to seeing what the top-voted ideas are.

Here's my entry:

Project 10100

What one sentence best describes your idea? (maximum 150 characters)

Ideas can be viral. Cultures and peoples can be affected profoundly by ideas that give the individual a need to subject those ideas upon others.

Describe your idea in more depth. (maximum 300 words)

Religion portrays itself in a benevolent light, hiding behind the veil of altruism and promising to answer life's questions and provide security in exchange for the sacrifice of one's ability to harness free thought. Fear is a very easy card to play on the human psyche. The fine balance of freedom and security is the most primal of Leary's eight circuits of consciousness, the fight or flight response in essence.

Consider an idea, what it is, what it can be. Ideas can have so much power, so much virulent potency. A juicy rumor for example, or promise to answer to all your hopes and dreams, solving all of life's mysteries in one fell swoop. Take a social network of the 'idea exchanges' between all individuals in a community, they are all sharing the same idea, in this example, 'Christianity'. This constant interconnected flow of ideas allows for rapid change, or group-theory to come into play. The idea can rapidly evolve when it encounters new world events, any change to the basic image that enhances the idea's 'virulence' (or how easy it is to take an uninformed member of the community, and turn them into an idea-sharer) will become the new idea. In essence this is an abstracted model of evolution.

Now picture each individual as the equivalent to a neuron in your brain firing off and communicating. Each individual node may not account for much, but the macroscopic structure of the brain lends itself to consciousness and intelligent adaptation for survival. This is how religion works. Anyone who believes has sacrificed their freedom and is contributing their energy to the consciousness and survival of the abstracted entity or ideological parasite.

- Consider this model and the crusades

  • Consider merits of freedom vs perceived security

  •

What problem or issue does your idea address? (maximum 150 words)

Religion.

Christianity, Crusades, Nazism, genocide, Taliban, September 11, Iraq war, extremism, terrorism, racism, slavery, The Cold War, McCarthyism.....

To name just a few of the profound merits that would play out upon the human race...

If your idea were to become a reality, who would benefit the most and how? (maximum 150 words)

Everyone who has potential, but decides it is better off in the hands of an ideological non-entity.

What are the initial steps required to get this idea off the ground? (maximum 150 words)

Mass public movement, underground popularization of the issue, use of the internet as a breeding ground for new thought. Perhaps LSD? I would love to be given the financial freedom to research this area and write a book thoroughly researching the subject.

Describe the optimal outcome should your idea be selected and successfully implemented. How would you measure it? (maximum 150 words)

Karl Marx's vision of how a society could function if every individual had the higher perspective to consider the group as a whole. The adoption of thoughtful, considerate and free thought, speech. A socio-political shift towards a new age of thinking. Where every man is their own god. And no god is higher than man.

If you'd like to recommend a specific organization, or the ideal type of organization, to execute your plan, please do so here. (maximum 50 words)

An 'open-source' approach to human governance. i.e. a model where everyone can contribute and participate

I was rejected from Norwich university. So all the unis I've applied for have rejected me, and I'll have to apply next year for an easier course to get into. =/ Perhaps to study philosophy and computer science or another combined degree course.
I already have planned a cycling trip with four friends from london to the south of france next year, so that will be great fun.
Ubuntu Linux is really great, and it is great to use and looks way better than xp, as well as being more customisable and easier to do everyday tasks.
I'm counting down the days until twin peaks season 2 is released on DVD!!

Interview Feb. 22nd, 2007 @ 10:36 pm
I had my interview for medical school yesterday, and overall it went well. It involved being interview with 7 other candidates and there were 7 interviewers in the room, and we had four minutes to talk to each, and then swap around to the next interviewer. Some of them asked really difficult questions, 'why should we accept you to go here' and 'what made you choose us over any other uni', and one of the interviewers had a severe disfigurement (cancer) to her face, and she could barely speak, and I had to be as polite as possible and ask her to say it again without staring at her tumor. I really hope they give me an offer, as all the other places I've applied for have turned me down so far.

I've found some great teas, 'moroccan mint green tea' and 'moonlight jasmine tea' are both really great and relaxing.
